Past president and board member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, Joel was made a Fellow in 2008 and is a Certified Professional Landscape Designer, author of seven critically acclaimed books, and numerous articles and columns for professional and homeowner publications.

A member of the Garden Writers Association, he was Maryland and DC Editor for People, Places & Plants Magazine. Joel’s articles and designs have been published in Landscape Architecture, American Nurseryman, Better Homes and Gardens, Garden Design, Architectural Designs, Gardens, Early American Life, Washington Gardener and People, Places & Plants.

Past chair of the USDA Graduate School Advisory Committee on Horticulture and Landscape Design for which he served 15 years, he received its Faculty Excellence Award and USDA Director’s award, held an appointment to American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment, was profiled in Landscape Design, Lawn and Landscape Magazine, named Designer of the Month in Home Mechanix and has judged national awards programs.

Joel is on the Board of directors for the American Academy of Landscape Design, “Remember Me” Rose Gardens (national gardens honoring all 9/11 victims), and a member of the Friends of Brookside Gardens.

He teaches seminars on landscape design and marketing and has lectured at the U.S. National Arboretum, American University, Smithsonian Institution, Hillwood Estate Museum and Gardens, Missouri Botanical Garden, George Washington University, and numerous professional landscape and nursery associations and garden expos nationwide.
