Ground Plane

Epimedium - Early pink or yellow flowers, disease free, long lived 12 to 18 inch perennial.

Big blue lily-turf (Liriope muscari) - Grassy looking foliage, forms tight clump, stays green in winter and has lavender grape hyacinth looking flowers in summer. Grows in heavy shade.

Hellebore - Blooms February, holds into April, evergreen, whitish purple flowers continue in spite of cold, ice and snow.

Hardy Begonia (Begonia grandis) - Reddish green foliage, one or two plants can colonize in several years, are full and lush in the moist very dark corners with fall pink flowers.

Hosta or plantain lily - Hundreds of varieties, a good plant to mass at the edge of a walk or flowering border.

Silver variegated Japanese sedge (Carex morrowii 'Variegata') - Evergreen, shade tolerant, silvery striped, 18 inch tall foliage, color a woodland garden year round.

Bugbane (Cimicifuga racemosa) - Named for tendency to repel insects, white, nodding spikes of flowers, three foot tall foliage, perennial.

Dwarf Fothergilla - Problem free shrub, showy yellow/red fall foliage, five feet high and wide, complement to azaleas and rhododendrons, deer resistant.

Japanese yellow waxbell (Kirengeshoma palmata) - Grows four feet in height, large maple shaped leaves, perennial, waxy, yellow nodding flowers in late summer.

Chinese witchhazel - Shrub or a tree, yellow fragrant flowers in winter, fall leaf color orange/red, many hybrids are available 15 to 20 feet tall

Nandina - Deer resistant, low maintenance, graceful habit, five foot tall shrub, red berries in winter.

Overhead Plane

American redbud - Small pink flowering tree, flowers profusely in March and April, entire branches often covered with blossoms, favorite hybrid called "forest pansy" has maroon foliage.

Kousa dogwood - Disease resistant tree, white, long lasting flowers in spring, large red edible fruits in summer, lacy bark, deep red fall foliage, Chinese kousa dogwood has the larger flowers.
